Aalborg university (AAU)

ted in 1974, Aalborg University (AAU) is the youngest Danish University with 18.000 students and a pedagogical structure based on problem-centered, real-life projects of educational and research relevance. The university is a member of The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), which consists of 10 innovative European universities whose purposes are the exchange of experience and the development of new projects within education, research and regional development. Participation in MANTIS is done by the center for Embedded Software Systems (CISS) and the research group on Reliability and Risk Analysis which together include 20 senior researchers, 12 postdocs and 15 PhD students. The groups have a long experience in management of European and National projects.

Relevant Expertise for the project:

The AAU team is internationally known for its work on models for wind turbine operation & maintenance, decision making and optimal energy planning. The results include models for uncertainties of turbine blade design, reliability assessments of turbines and substructures, models for drivetrain components as well as models for energy optimisation. The UPPAAL tool is the standard academic tool for analysis of probabilistic models, and it has been applied in a number of industrial and European projects for modelling of complex systems. The team is key partner in a number of related EU projects like e.g. ARTEMIS Arrowhead, FP7 FET CASSTING, Interreg POWER CLUSTER.

Role in the project:

AAU will contribute to the work of WP4 on root failure analysis and remaining life identification. Also, AAU will play a major role in the off-shore use-case where the WP4 results will be applied on real prototypical data in order to perform an optimal trade-off between energy optimisation and system availability.

Wapice Ltd. (WAPICE)

Relevant Expertise for the project:

As a software vendor Wapice has the expertise regarding the key technologies for the development of service platform for maintenance including data warehousing, remote monitoring and diagnosis. Through the wide customer contacts Wapice has good knowledge of the market need in many industrial and commercial service sectors.

Role in the project:

Wapice is developing a remote management platform that enables operational efficiency and business model innovation for industrial companies. The platform supports supervisory monitoring, control, automation and advanced reporting functionalities. By adapting industrial standards the platform allows efficient condition, maintenance and reliability management. Being big data enabled analyzing large amount of historical data is easier than ever. Utilizing the WRM Terminal unit, other 3rd party systems or communicating directly using OPC UA, REST or similar communication standard the internet of things is becoming reality and WRM positioned at the heart of it. By developing the analysis and decision making algorithms, big data analysis tools and data mining techniques it is possible to provide a really unique tool for condition monitoring purposes which is able to serve versatile business needs. By further developing the reporting tools and creating scalable, re-usable and cross-platform compatible interfaces to access data and analysis results, human to machine interaction can be optimised and user experience and service willingness improved. The main focus will be in WP4 and additionally contribution to WP7. In WP4 Wapice shall develop statistical tools required to post-process the gathered data. These include for example support for running statistical languages in server context and implementing suitable analysis and decision making algorithms for post-processing the data. Important task for Wapice is also development of reporting tools for providing analysis results in sensible and user-friendly format. This includes for example automatic report generation, user experience and report accessibility related tasks. In WP7 Wapice demonstrates the analysis and decision making tools implemented in WP4 together with other showcase partners.

Role in the project:

The special aim of Solteq is to develop extended service management solutions to support customer companies´ operational activities, processes and utilisation of various data sources in decision making and analysis, and the adaptive fleet management solutions with shared architecture and information models. The main focus in Mantis program is to build up the data processing models for extended Internet of Things based service offering and to build up interoperable interfaces with emerging data streams and existing solutions (ERP, EAM, CMMS).

Key problems identified:

  • Cloud based computing, mobility and social networks challenges the current business models.
  • Internet of Things opens new data streams that cannot be exploited by traditional ICT systems.
  • Customers look for new service offering that supports better the global value networks in service business.

Problem solving roadmap and the main topics to be developed by Solteq are:

  • Development of models and methods for enterprise asset and service business management in the framework of IoT.
  • Develop model and methods for optimisation of customer specific maintenance service program in the framework of IoT to achieve required availability and safety with minimum costs.
  • Development of RAMS ( Realiability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety ) and EAM integration in the framework of IoT to achieve new information service based business models.

Desired outcomes by Solteq are:

  • Extended asset and service management software functionalities based on combined data is described, tested and validated.
  • Methods for information integration and utilisation of various data sources and data streams are developed and validated.

Nome Oy is a company providing predictive maintenance services and products. Nome Oy services cover machine inspections, predictive maintenance development projects, training and monitoring systems. Nome Oy has developed state-of-the-art condition monitoring system suitable for wide scale of industrial machines. Monitoring system support wireless communication and internet based remote monitoring.


Relevant Expertise for the project:

Nome has long expertise on industrial condition monitoring. Nome has worked with different industries making tailored online condition monitoring systems and on field trouble shooting with different measuring methods. Working closely with real life cases has given Nome strong knowledge on actual measuring environments and relevant measuring data. Nome has made tailored monitoring systems for propulsion systems on vessels, turbines on hydro plants and wireless measuring systems which are used inside engines

Role in the project:

Nome will focus on developing high quality measurements using MEMS based sensor technology and using history/process data for making more accurate predictions together with measuring data acquired by Nome´s monitoring system.This will require developing interfaces between customer systems (process automation, ERP) and Nome monitoring systems. Nome will take part mostly work packages 3 and 4.

Lapland University of Applied Sciences (LUAS)

Lapland University of Applied Sciences (Lapland UAS) is a higher education establishment which is a successor of two Universities of Applied Sciences: Kemi-Tornio UAS and Rovaniemi UAS. All activities of these two organisations were transferred to Lapland UAS from 1.1.2014. The turnover of Lapland UAS is about 43 million euros and the volume of research, development and innovation activities is about 10 million euros. The number of employees is app. 560 persons.The university is providing bachelor and master level degrees in four units. Numbers of students per field of expertise: Wellness services around 1900, Business and culture around 1300, Tourism services around 1 200, and Industry and natural resources around 2000 students. Lapland UAS has an important role as regional developer through education, research, development and innovation activities. The two predecessors of Lapland UAS have been audited and quality awarded by the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC). At the beginning of the year 2014 Europe Business Assembly (EBA) has granted Best Regional Universities award for Lapland UAS

Relevant Expertise for the project:

The research focus of Lapland UAS is on industrial maintenance (preventive maintenance, from data to knowledge), vision systems, usability of materials, and information technology (embedded systems, wireless solutions for the industry). In addition to research, Lapland UAS also trains personnel in industries. Lapland UAS runs the ProcessIT.EU CoIE in cooperation with Lulea University of Technology. The R&D is conducted in cooperation with companies in Finland and abroad – especially in the North of Sweden. The cooperation is very close with the strong, modern process industry in the North of Finland – pulp&paper, stainless steel, and mining – as well as with automation and industrial service companies. Co-operation with SMEs especially in the North of Finland is strong.

Role in the project:

Lapland UAS is expected to provide knowledge and experience from industrial maintenance and specifically operation & maintenance related information management. Lapland UAS’ knowledge of embedded systems will provide support for wireless communications and software solutions. In addition Lapland UAS’ experience in mobile applications and user-interfaces will be beneficial to the project. Methods for human-machine interaction are also the Lapland UAS’ expertise and will support the project. Lapland UAS will contribute primarily in WP4 (Analysis and decision making functionalities) and WP5 (HMI design and development). In addition with contribution in WP1 (Service platform architecture requirement definition. Scenarios and use cases descriptions) and WP6 (Business impact and models). Lapland UAS will also support others in WP7 (Validation of MANTIS solutions in relevant scenarios). Lapland UAS will support mainly Finnish participants and especially Solteq Oy in their research and development work.

Relevant Expertise for the project:

VTT has participated and led a large number of research project supporting maintenance starting from the strategic point of view, covering diagnosis, prognosis and e.g. sensor development for many different industrial sectors. The research area is considered strategically very important for VTT through its importance to Finnish industry.

Role in the project:

VTT will contribute in Mantis in the development of the service platform, sensor technology, diagnosis and prognosis. VTT will participate in WPs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. The main focus will be in WP2, WP3 and WP4.

Mondragon Sistemas S. Coop (MSI)

MSI is an Automation, Industrial Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering SME company (118 employees) that develops, implements and maintains integral solutions based on Control, Information and Communication technologies to increase efficiency of operation and its clients competitiveness. MSI offers solutions to several industries as metal transformation, iron and steel industry, water, paper, air, etc. MSI identifies the needs and problems of industry, shares our customer’s technological concerns and puts forward competitive solutions. All this enables us to have such a close relationship with our customers. MSI main products are (i) Automation, Control and Industrial Informatics solutions, (ii) Management Execution Systems (MES) to manage production activities of industrial plants and (iii) Systems concerning energy efficiency: existing processes improvement, new processes development, with a constant cycle timing or cost reduction in all the projects.

Relevant Expertise for the project:

In its more than 20 years of existence, MSI has acquired a broad experience in data acquisition and industrial IT projects due to the L1 and L2 automation projects in a national and international environment. Projects vary from data capturing for energy consumption analysis, L2 process control projects for flat steel processing lines (inspection lines, cutting lines,….). In these years, MSI has been realising projects integrating typical tools like IBA-PDA and QDR (IBA-ag), Simatic IT (SIEMENS), RSLinx-FTTM, FT Historian,… (Rockwell), Oracle database (Oracle).

Role in the project:

MSI will act as an integrator in the two demo sites, guaranteeing the reliability of the data acquisition and storage in the target data container . Since the complete data acquisition will be heterogenous in speed (some parameters in milliseconds, others in seconds, minutes…) , medium (ethernet, electrical,…) and protocol (OPC, TCP/IP). An industrial architecture will be set up to obtain a reliable data acquisition with redundancy of data and transparency for the higher level treatment software layer. Additionally MSI will be in charge of the first visualisation of the obtained data with time series, histograms,….to start and improve asset management based on detailed data.

Acciona Infraestructuras S.A. (ACCIONA)

ACCIONA Infraestructuras has a wide experience in R&D projects both national and European, even international projects beyond Europe.

Relevant Expertise for the project:

ACCIONA Infrastructure is part of a company with a wide variety of global business (www.acciona.com), management decided to promote collaboration between the different lines of business. This is thought to be the technology center for R&D and personnel of the plant where the pultrusion process is carried out jointly evaluate the efficiency and the current state of development of the whole process. Currently the plant is only serving one of the branches of the company but is expected from now to offer a wider service.

Role in the project:

ACCIONA Infraestructuras will assume a dual role within Mantis project, both as a provider of a use case, and as a technical developer of monitoring solutions specifically customised for the needs of our use case. The use case proposed is related to the manufacturing process of composite structural elements (profiles) used in advanced civil infrastructures construction such as beams, reinforcement panels, etc. either with carbon or glass fiber. ACCIONA would therefore provide the know-how of the process and the different roles involved (production manager, process engineer, operators, etc), as well as other complementary processes such as personnel planning, inventory control, production parametrisation, and scheduling. We will provide also our premises for performing the validation activities of the use case.

Goizper S. Coop (GOIZPER)

GOIZPER is a Company of 160 employees, which was founded in 1959 has 2 very different established business lines (Industrial and Sprayer divisions) in which they are leaders and a world reference with respect to both innovation and product. The Industrial Division is specialized in engineering, designing, manufacturing and supplying power transmission components for metal forming machine tools like: clutches, brakes, cams and intermittent rotary units for different types of applications. Goizper is the first manufacturer of press brakes and clutches at a Spanish level and is on the top 3 worldwide. The turnover of the Industrial Division in 2013 was of 13 million Euros, of which 75% is due to the sales of brakes and clutches. Actually the exports, to the major industrialized countries (USA, Germany, Japan, Brazil, etc) represent the 70% of the turnover. Goizper has recently opened a delegation in China and Germany.

The strategy of the industrial division is focused on:

  • The development of new products and service, protecting the IPR to ensure a payback in a reasonable
    period of time.
  • The development of new strategies to optimise the production processes by:
    • Research on new materials and processes.
    • Development of more efficient and flexible new processes.
  • Improve the technological position in the market.

The main areas of development of the industrial division are:

  • Manufacturing mechanical pieces and assemblies.
  • Manufacturing pneumatic and hydraulic combined clutch and brakes.
  • Manufacturing electromagnetic brakes and small plates.
  • Manufacturing all type of indexers.
  • New flexible Manufacturing methodologies.
  • New service pack.

Relevant Expertise for the project:

The technologies used in the design, manufacturing and service of power transmission components where GOIZPER has deep knowledge are focused in:

  • Precision engineering
  • Friction behavior (friction coefficient and wear in different running conditions).
  • Clutch-brake behavior in different running conditions.
  • Hydraulic technology.
  • High precision machining technologies.
  • Computer simulation and applied.
  • Test bench and clutch-brake sensing.

A common characteristic of these businesses is the ability to integrate all these technologies applied for development power transmission devices. GOIZPER for the development of MANTIS project will use all this knowledge. The combined clutch-brake is a very critical part in metal forming machines, is the part to be safety the machine, braking in very short time (brake side) and transmit all motor torque for forming (clutch side). Due to is very important control the correct performance of the clutch-brake unit. Until now the control of the good performance is done mixing direct and indirect measurements like: application pressure, response time, oil temperature, vibrations, etc. But most critical parameter to be controlled is the wear of friction pack in the clutch side (dynamic part) and until now this value is calculated by indirect way. For improve the sensing feedback GOIZPER is going to develop a wireless sensing system (wear and temperature) and operational unit for get in real time the performance of the clutch and brake.

Role in the project:

The main work that will be performed by GOIZPER in MANTIS project will be to propose and drive a total current and real use case from the point of view of critical part in power transmission (clutch-brake) in metal forming installations. GOIZPER will provide knowledge in the design, manufacture and maintenance of clutch-brake for forming installations and maintenance management of these power transmission components. Mainly GOIZPER will be involved in the WP7 (Demonstration and validation in Press machine maintenance), where will be defined, will be implemented and will be validated a real use case, doing it firstly in the test bench at real scale. GOIZPER will provide knowledge in current systems or methods of maintenance management of clutch and brake components (main critical part in the mechanical press machines). Moreover also work in WP3 (Smart sensing and data acquisition technologies) and WP4 (Analysis and decision making functionalities)
